What are people expecting of TH?

So it seems like many have already come to conclusions based on poor phone recordings. People are apparently really into what they're hearing, or they're extremely critical. Based on the few tracks I've heard, it sounds absolutely amazing (and very BOC) and I can't even imagine how much I'll love it with a proper listen.

I'm having a hard time understanding some of the comments I'm reading here - not BOC enough, tracks going nowhere, too hard hitting, etc. Did the people who are disappointed get into BOC through The Campfire Headphase? If that is the case, then I guess I understand, but to the ones that don't like what they've heard: why not and what were you expecting?

I'm not going to judge anything that sounds like its been played over a school tannoy. Reach for the Dead is amazing. 10 more days to wait!

I'm expecting a fun investment of time getting to know 15 or so new songs as intimately as I know their cousins from other albums. If it's half as fun as getting to know all of their other songs, it'll be an expectation well met.

"not BoC" enough is total nonsense, it definitely sounds like the work of BoC, it's just different

it almost sounds like while their previous albums were warm and analog, this one is cold and digital - there's nothing wrong with that, it's just music for two different moods

I am expecting something different and something fantastic.

I'm definitely hoping for something that heads back to the routes of offsetting, yet calming, ambient/drone. Reach for the Dead does a fantastic job at hitting this idea on the head; though not as "offsetting" as any given track from Music Has the Right to Children...I'm sure you know what I mean.

I feel like the offsetting/calming sound is what gives Boards their essence and individuality. Not many ambient producers can inspire several emotions, as Boards can, with such simplicity ahead of complexity.

And that's what I'm hoping for.

Another Geogaddi, another Music Has the Right to Children. (Of course, different enough that it will be considered another album, not a rehash). I see in preceding posts that it's more "digital" sounding rather than the classic analog sound we're used to hearing. I find nothing wrong with this whatsoever! I love the sound that Reach for the Dead gives; not going to listen to any recordings from the Lake to make or break the album.

Hopes are high.

I have to wonder, and I doubt it completely, if all the years waiting were comprised of Boards deciding to finally move on and getting comfortable with a DAW, learning how to use everything and taking as long as they need to the point where they could again produce BoC music. That could be the result of the "digital" sound.

I think it will have something for everyone, and remain true to their aesthetic, but it might be a challenging release for those who feel most comfortable in the shallow end of their catalog.

I don't mean shallow in a bad way, but for people that have very specific preferences when it comes to BoC, rather than a mostly equal appreciation for their catalog (even I have a breaking point, there's probably a solid half hour of Old Tunes material I could go without ever hearing again, as much as I love most of it, and put it in the same pedestal as their full albums)

While I have liked everything I have heard and prefer a darker sound i have to say that some of my favorite boc tracks are EYDIAB, Kid for today, sixtyniner, left side drive, IABPOITC, Turquoise hexagon sun. I have a very strong inclination that there are no songs like those on this new album. I think that the tracks I mentioned have a certain similarity in the feel and I doubt there is anything like that based off of what I have read and heard thus far.

unsettling, like the darker cousin to MHTRTC 10 years later through the 80s. more accessible than Geogaddi. expecting an uneasy ride, dry like the desert. not a big fan of the artwork/visual style they've gone with this time or more to the point what was suggested to them and they went with. was expecting something less direct.

something very emotional and touching, although not as creepy as Geogaddi and not as joyful as TCH.
An awesome album to trip to.

Don't be too sure about that, even Geogaddi had its Julie and Candy, Dawn Chorus and Sunshine Recorder among all the darkness.

I think I will listen the album over and over as long as every song will not look like peace of creation. Because I know not all of them will be good for me for the first, second, thirdd etc time. boc cant dissapoint with their thoughts.

I am expecting a maturing in the sound and composition, from what I have heard (RFTD, Detroit's Cold Earth) it sounds as my wish will be granted. Aside from that, I reserve my judgment for some time after the record drops, but I fully expect it to be an altering release.

Personally I can't wait to listen to the whole thing. Every track that's out there so far sounds fantastic. I think that Campfire Headphase was their most bland and pop-ish release to date, so listening to these new tracks that all sound like a mix of John Carpenter and Jean Michel Jarre, but all filtered by BoC is like a dream come true.
I am ecstatic. :p

I think it's great that they shifted their sound a bit away from what everyone is used to but still absolutely retained the essence of BoC. It's something totally new and unexpected but at the same time something completely familiar.

Of all the previous BoC albums, I think TH will be the most similar to Trans Canada Highway. I think there will be some new musical stuff to offer, like some chord progressions and harmonies we haven't seen before with BoC, as well as some new stuff that I simply can't predict.

I think BoC have grown out of the kids voices in music. I don't think I'll hear much guitar, either. There also doesn't appear to be a lot of short "filler tracks."

I think BoC are reverting back to an old sound, but this time they're much better producers and composers than they were before.

Plus, I think that the reason for such a long wait was a combination of just life and stuff happening, along with a desire to not release something mediocre. All of their LPs have been great so far. Campfire wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but I still think it's a great album. After the first couple LPs bands start to release stale material. This is a stage that BoC don't want to do, so that why I think they really took their time with this release.
