Overrated BoC songs

Post by Jonse »

There's the opposite, so what the hell.

I'll start: nearly everything on Tomorrow's Harvest (and by that I mean everything except parts of Gemini, parts of Sick Times, Uritual, Telepath and New Seeds - would say Nothing is Real except that's one of those songs that sounds like the best the first time you hear it but in repeated plays becomes almost nothing because of how repetitive it is), especially Jacquard Causeway. You know how there's songs you really like and then there's some that are just okay and you kind of listen to them without a lot of attachment? You ever hear one that's intolerable, just downright annoying? You cannot continue to listen to it? That's this track for me, and it's literally the only one in BoC's discography.

Going back: Left Side Drive - it's good, it's just not as good as everyone acts like it is
Okay...now...wait for fog machine.

Wow, controversial corner.

For me Uritual and Gemini are my favorites on TH, but to say the rest of the album (apart from parts of Telepath, New Seeds, Nothing is Real and Sick Times) is overrated is quite a statement. Fair play for saying it, but I really don't agree. The only track that's been getting lots of hype on here, and I don't know why, is Palace Posy. It's good, but doesn't really flow with the rest of the album imo.

@ Ustillhavefriends, Amo Bishop Roden is one of the most emotive tracks they've ever made. It nearly brings me to tears every time I listen to it.

Satellite Anthem Icarus doesn't really do anything for me and I usually skip it.

Palace Posy is bigger than the album, that's why.

Dayvan Cowboy comes to mind, not to mention OT stuff which I am much less enthusiastic about than a lot of people. I'm hesitant to say anything from TH because 2 months after release it may be overly difficult to distinguish between residual short-term hype that will eventually dissipate and genuinely undeserved praise. If Reach for the Dead's current level of popularity endures a year or two out from now that will most surely belong on the list.

Haha, fair enough. I'm not hating on it, it is a very clever piece of music, but to me it just doesn't seem to fit TH.
Saying all that, it'll probably be my favorite track on TH in a year or two's time.

i do agree with the fact that tomorrows harvest is far too repetitive. you gave a good example by using nothing is real. that track is extremely emotional, and you can feel it just dripping with nostalgia. but after a few listens you practically have the track memorized because there are very few changes throughout the track. and this causes me to lose interest in some of the tracks on tomorrows harvest. they just seem to repeat and repeat and repeat.

with that said, i still believe all the repetition on tomorrows harvest is for a reason. like there might be some way of combining sounds and loops from some of the songs, and putting them together with other tracks. to create an entirely new listening experience for this album. i also believe their might be some type of movie\video to go a long with this record that they havent released for us yet. dont get me wrong, there is the possibility that tomorrows harvest really is just overly repetitive for no reason, and there is nothing else to find out.

back to the topic..

ill say happy cycling, for the same reason that i stated above. the track is just way to repetitive

i also think telephasic workshop is over hyped.

im not saying i dont like these tracks, they just arent even close to my favorites, and everyone else seems to love them.

oscar see through red eye for me. i like it enough now but it just sounds like randomly fucking around with a bunch of melodies and slapping them all into a song. the first time i heard i didnt like it at all cuz of it but i learned to think it's ok for the fact that its just that kind of song. i still have no clue how it was one of the pre album singles though

and amo bishop roden too. the main melody is cool but it doesn't go anywhere at all other than more bass and a beat or two

For me the only 'over-rated' tune as such is "1969". The tuned speech sounds like a poor man's version of what they did so well on IABPOITC, and the '...1969 in the sunshine..' bit isn't worthy of them - too obvious and rather naff. Yet many people love this track - I expect I would too if it was instrumental
...what subtlety?

1969 hands-down most overrated, over-cited song from boc.

1969 is a track that I usually don't think too highly, but every time it comes up, it always grabs me. Not many songs can sound as watery as this.

On the other hand, I never felt too hot about Turquoise Hexagon Sun. It's seen like a signature song for them, but to me it's just a pleasant tune without much going on.

And I second Oscar See Through Red Eye. People comment on how "complex" it sounds, but to me it's just crowded and random.

And I think the only track that comes close to being as green is Sunshine Recorder.

I hate saying this, i really do, but I am pretty damn disappointed with Tomorrow's Harvest. It has its moments, sure, but it was a bit of a shock and a let down. I think it's their weakest album, by a long shot. I'm still very glad they brought it out, and it does have its moments, as I've said, but I know it's never gonna be one I listen to much of. So yeah, I do think it's overrated, much less impressive and powerful as their previous work, but thats just my opinion of course, and I do appreciate what they were going for with this album, and I think they achieved it, but it's not one for me at all.

Dayvan Cowboy got stale and seems to have remained in that state for a while now. Don't get me wrong, it's a great track, just doesn't have the replay value. New Seeds seems to be getting some love around here, but I find it to be by far the most uninspired track on TH, what people are hearing in it is beyond me.

I liked TH at first, or rather I tried very f*ucking hard to, and don't get me wrong, I really did enjoy some tracks, and still do. But I followed that hype like a little kid, rushing home from work to get the gossip and trying to crack clues, and now I feel a little disappointed. I would say overall, and just for me, it's their weakest release, followed by Trans Canada, but i absolutely adore everything else they've done, to bits. And I LOVE TCH, has many of my favourite BoC tracks, i'll never understand how people didnt rate that so highly. But sure, different strokes for different folks, a lot of ye love this album and that's all well and good!

I am looking forward to new repressings, have most of em anyway, but need MHTRTC, so have picked that bad boy up. I don't really know if i like the idea of remastering Geogaddi, why fuck with perfection? And 6 panels inserts? Curious what that will look like. - All off topic I know, I just wanted to state that while disappointed with TH after the build up, I am very happy with this news, so somewhat relevant (I hope)

how is it controversial, if you can't take shots at your own idols and prove that even they're human, how can you even possibly comprehend at aspiring to them.

if they stuff up and can go on, why can't we.

to the topic, I'd probably say a lot of TCH. I think besides a few tracks that album is mostly throw away.

Probably something like Dayvan Cowboy.

Also Amo Bishop Roden, I feel that goes nowhere its entire 6 minute duration. The bass thumps are also annoying.

Jacquard Causeway makes its point by about a third of the way through but no it's got to keep going anyway. Also the lead synth is grating and too loud on the high notes.

And, fuck it. Telephasic Workshop is good, but it's not *that* good.

I can't say if it's over-rated, as I've not heard many people speak their opinions about it, but I really don't like Zoetrope, and don't feel like it suits the mood of that EP at all, rest is gold.

Feel bad saying negative things about BoC, but they have made the finest music I've ever heard and have been a massive part of my life since I discovered them. I am absolutely in love with them and do feel that they can do no wrong, well, up until the latest album (sorry lads!!) But then again, people love it, its just the one that doesn't sit well with me as a whole album. I also really actually hate the artwork, compared too all the others. They should have done it themselves like all their other album artwork!
