we only sift for air

Post by vanlorne »

I think part of the reason that controversial or argumentative type topics come up seemingly "often" to some is that there is really nothing new to talk about, and those type of threads at least spark some conversation.

This forum is pretty dead these days, unfortunately. and people just start grasping at any glimmer of meaning or hope in the most unlikely places, not that that sort of thing is new here, but when the years go by with nothing new from boc, then that's pretty much whats left. But its sort of a survival technique, our air, the hope that there is more than there really is, whether that's trying to place meaning of certain voices in tracks, lack of apostrophes in song titles, vague image references, its all the same really.

We have to keep ourselves entertained, and since camp boc has once again gone completely dark, what better way then to dissect the already dissected, make something out of nothing, take our impatience out on our most disliked albums or tracks, and throw around speculation like rice at a wedding, hoping that something sticks, somewhere.

That was a very realistic observation. I think a lot of us are aware that we over-analyse and try to make something out of what is basically nothing. Personally it has turned in to a kind of game for me and not the kind of desperation for something to happen that others might share. It is kind of a personal hobby putting meaning in to things that most likely don't have meaning because it seems to be something inherently human. Also very stimulating for the mind as a kind of weird recreational practice. If people view it as anything more than a bit of fun then they should realise it is just a band (a divine one at that) we are talking about here. Humans want controversy. Valotonin saw a car crash today and he hadn't really felt alive for months beforehand. I could say it has something to do with how society is basically sensory deprivation but that would be a little too much.

We could all sign up to the board with another identity and try to guess who is who? That could be fun.

Although I suspect some would be really obvious... ;)

Nothing new? The band released probably the most cryptic album to date and repressed all their catalogue and still nothing? :)

This would have been valid two years ago
What is particularly cryptic about TH?
Repress does not = new

Represses were new to me, as it was opportunity for me to have the band's music.
Hi scores represses came last october.
What is particularly, well I don't wanna show fingers, but the whole album is filled with layers and messages, there's still working cosecha-transmisiones site, which presumably can lead to speculation, that is still something unsolved in the album.

Right, so...let's see, you joined with the thousand other 'new seeds' back in 2013. You however have hung around for a while. Kudos. I'm still young here and I'm not going to act like two years is a lot of leverage but I can speak to one particular thing, which is that for a long while there was "nothing new" to talk about. For years, and let's see, I've lurked here since about 2009 where general speculation was still in its infancy. That is to say the most popular twoism thread ever did not exist.

In all that time, this place managed to be pretty chill. There weren't any "controversial" or "argumentative" 'type' topics to my recollection. Did people argue or say things controversial? Yeah, they did. Nobody got real pissy about it though. People were generally respectful enough to help continue cultivating a community that did not need moderation. Mexicola's moderation since the forum migration has probably been at least twice the amount of moderation that had occurred in several years beforehand. That's how little I saw moderation around here.

So why does that keep happening? No easy answer other than "people act differently now".

Everyone's logic confuses me. The forum is dead "these days"? No it isn't. This is still more active than it was when I signed up. That perspective is completely rooted in the TH hype camp. People dissect things here because that's what there is to talk about. Disregarding the specific years where Twoism was/wasn't particularly active, that's what discussion about a band that doesn't tour is. We talk about songs, the specifics of their construction, we talk about the band and we pick at our brains.

There doesn't have to be any serious argumentative behavior. It's entirely contrived. People choose to get into something they could avoid. Trust me, I previously could barely control myself in that regard. Then life stepped in and said "hey, you have shit to do".

So whenever we've sifted too far, we should go on a jog or something.

Robin does *not* like sock puppets. Definitely, some fun could be had, but that's been the rule for quite some time.

Interesting and provoking points you bring up. Although I haven't been too involved on the forum, I've visited often enough to understand where you're coming from.
This is close to things that have crossed my mind when thinking about the community overall, more recently I've noticed the "who is online" section at the bottom of the page, and I've seen how few visitors there are. (not counting anonymous/hidden statuses of accounts)

......are we only Reaching for the Dead? (b'dm...tsss)

I wouldn't say so. You just have to look at the overall picture:
we're dealing with an internet forum, so things are naturally going to be a lot more loose and lax than say, an ongoing chatroom of instant messages.
This, coupled with the fact that the band is quite reserved and private, may seem to not amount to much.
But I'm still appreciative for the community, even if things go along slowly.

I like to guess that the members that have ended up drawn to here like to think.
I know that's what I find myself doing often when listening to the music of Boards of Canada.
In regards to the rampant speculation and the picking apart of their music, in some cases, the thinking may be a bit far-fetched. But in that case, we can talk it out, and at least remember to not take things too seriously.
Sure, there's probably countless things the band would laugh at if they saw it themselves, but I would lighten up about it. Art is after all, generally open to interpretation.

I also look at the bigger picture....there's an interesting chapter overall, shared between this community, the new album, and even humanity itself.
I'm referring to the feelings evoked from the imagery in the album art and the music video for Tomorrow's Harvest, as well as what the brothers have expressed in their latest interviews. We find ourselves today still in a curious stage, living beings amongst a sea of technology and a rush for progression.
There's detachment, increasing complacency, and other things that make this not wholly positive.

What I think is important amongst these hard facts is to keep some forms of connection going, in daily life---but occasionally also on this forum. In a way, it's good that we're not rushing to post constantly, just as Boards of Canada don't rush the output of their music. Careful time invested in the development of ideas can make for better results.

Us forum members can devote our lives to....well....our actual lives, and not too much time locked to a computer screen.

When we feel the need, we can come here, to a place where we are free to discuss and muse, brought together by the mutual appreciation of a duo whom I'm sure we can agree are certainly one of the most intriguing and unique musical acts of this age.

All hail the Boards' board.

To me the upcoming meeting is more important then any BoC news and speculation.

Personally I feel like the focus has shifted from BoC to creating long-lasting friendships between forum goers. We don't have to sift for air because we don't have to sift. We can just enjoy good audio frequencies and eachothers digital company. Isn't that what this forum has really been about all this time? When the BoC news is scarce I say we move over to the other subforums. I don't post in the boc section a lot anyway, relatively speaking. I've met the coolest peeps here, had some really amazing times talking to some of them.

There is a lot more to discuss on these forums then just BoC. A lot more cool music. It just feels most of the members don't care for anything else but the band. If people post work that is BoC related they get a lot of cool responses. If they do their own shizz nobody here seems to care because they are to busy poking around the BoC subforum looking for clues. Aren't we supposed to be exploring and applauding originality? Isn't that one of the reasons we like this kind of crazy music in the first place?

Come everybody, follow me to This Random Sound and lets discuss TONS of other GREAT, ORIGINAL, THOUGHT PROVOKING music, some that even smell and taste like our favourite band! Most of the music I know and love today I discovered there, long ago. Do you love BOC? Or do you love MUSIC, like me?

*sigh* This discussion happens pretty much every time something is released...

Regardless of when people joined this site, I can understand why some people are a little agitated.
TH is a great album, but I'm guessing a few people here on this forum waited a very very very long time for that album and when they listened to it they were kinda like "...I waited all this time for THAT?"

If BoC release another album in the next year or so, that would be cool, but otherwise without any live gigs , new EPs or bonus surprise tracks, we don't have anything new to discuss other than reviewing tracks and albums.

Hopefully BoC reveal that they've hidden some sort of super super brand new secret inside one of their albums and then everyone will start uniting to try and decode it. I always thought BoC would be the kind of people that would hide an ENTIRE bonus track inside their album without people knowing... or even an entire album!

In The Campfire Headphase if you reverse Satellite Anthem Icarus you get to hear 30 seconds of a track that personally reminds me of the Duffy snippet from Acid Memories. Also if you have the album on vinyl and you play it at 45 rpm then you get to experience the album in a totally different way.

So somebody disappointed when boc released something they won't expecting, I guess that's your problem, if you can't go with the flow and don't trust your artist to have a different angle on the music. Like for me with TCH it's totally not my style of music, simply because I'm not enjoy acoustic guitar, but it grew on me, as I wanted to get what the band trying express in that album, I'm trying to keep an open mind.
Also reply to some people, having registered to this forum for a longer time than others don't make you a bigger fan. This is not some secret fanboy society. At the time TH was announced, I got exactly the same amount of information from twoism and watmm, so one thing that really makes difference is, that you can go on very specific boc questions here, at least I thought.
So I wish you all to stay more open minded and all things will come up eventually.

Agree with Cupz. This place is way more than just about BOC. Frankly, if BOC packed it in tomorrow I'd like to think Twoism would carry on regardless.

Aye, we all have BOC in common, but what's most interesting about the folk on here is actually everything else - opinions, passions, experiences.

Nice title of thread.

I respect twoism immensely for it's dedication, this place can feel like dead air space but that's almost BOC'ish in a funny sort of way. If this place was pinging and zinging 24hours a day I think it would lose it's charm.
