RIP Steve Irwin

Post by sevenELIXIR »

Just woke up to find out the crocodile hunter Steve Irwin was killed... and not by a crocodile but a stingray. Rest in peace good man.

nice to see a mention of this without the "hilarious" photoshopped pictures that are doing the rounds. Such a compassionate bunch here at Twoism!

Award for least appropriate tribute goes to Reuters:

Africa’s great crocodile hunter saluted his Australian counterpart on Monday, saying the death of Steve Irwin by a stingray barb was an "unfitting" end for the fearless showman.
"I’m very upset to hear about it. I know that he led a dangerous life but it just doesn’t seem right that a fish should kill him... It is an unfitting death for him," said Khalid Hassen, who has shot dead over 17,000 African crocodiles in a hunting career which has spanned over four decades. "I thought he would perhaps get mauled by a crocodile but a stingray?"

He wasn't THAT kind of crocodile hunter, guys...

I just read that his death was filmed by the cameraman in the water at the time. Makes you wonder if that footage will ever see the light of day.

A stingray is large venomous ray with large barbed spines near the base of a thin whiplike tail capable of inflicting severe wounds.

That thing about him killing crocs is bullshit. He loved animals and I don't believe that for a second. I didn't even believe he died until I saw it on abc news. There has been previous rumors on the internet that he died from a spider bite, mauled by a croc, etc....I can't really say I'm surprised, cause when you have such a dangerous profession, something like this is bound to happen. Still, he was a very cool and entertaining guy that will be missed.

Well it should be surprising that he was killed by a stingray. Stingrays have toxic barbs which rarely kill anyone, it's not typical. The reason why it killed Steve is because the barb went in under his ribcage and pierced his heart. Definetly not a typical encounter with a stingray. So yes it is VERY surprising that a stingray killed him.

My mom told me this morning. Quite sad...he never wanted to do anything but help animal wildlife, it seemed.
