"The World Becomes Flesh" in the end credits of Backrooms

Post by Pilgrim S »

Backrooms was released the same day as Inferno. I wonder how the makers of the film got hold of the track. They must have known a long time before we did about the release of the album.
Backrooms seems like a really interesting film. It's origins are from Youtube and it's pretty huge if you look it up.

Saw Backrooms on Saturday and knew this was a treat waiting at the end of the movie. I also was wondering how this came to be and who reached out to who. I doubt the brothers themselves would, but it’s possible WARP did or maybe Kane reached out to use some older BoC music and WARP offered the new Inferno material? Kane’s score work would lead me to think he is probably a BoC fan himself.

Yes, he's a known fan and has said that BOC is an inspiration for him. Very impressed with the themes explored in the movie and the parallels with some of what BOC explores.

I'll repost my theory from another thread: BoC's kids are huge Backrooms fans, and as soon as the brothers heard there was a movie being made, they reached out directly to Kane Pixels to get a song in and be the coolest dads ever

I love this theory!

Although A24 reaching out to Warp Records and then getting surprised by new music from the brothers is just as likely. I bet the initial communication was done at Kane's behest.

Kane Parsons is a MASSIVE BoC fan. He uses their music in his Instagram stories multiple times a week, lol.

I'm rather stoked to see this movie! It looks like a trip, and the reviews are really positive.

Over its opening weekend it just made $81.5 million domestically, which is just 1M less than Oppenheimer. An INSANE feat for a 20-year-old director. The budget was 10 Mill, by the way.

I mean, i'm sure the brothers must have at some point been eagerly following the analogue horror and liminal space content on youtube. It's pretty much in their aesthetic plus they worked with leyland kirby, aka the artist behind the caretaker (wich is essentially the musical project that helped create the whole liminal space trend)

I'm pretty sure the only other piece of media that both BOC and Leyland Kirby were featured on besides Backrooms was the haunted Christmas-themed various artists release "Whine and Missingtoe" from the old V/Vm Test Records days. BOC's contribution to this release was under their Hell Interface name, and it's probably the best known Hell Interface track.

Some of the stuff on that label was kind of doing in the 90s what Vaporwave would do over 10 years later.

The Hell Interface track in question is "Soylent Night":

This is pure speculation, but i'd bet we've only seen a small percent of hell interface's full discography and most of the stuff is private, and i'd also bet that includes more leyland kirby stuff too since V/Vm Test Records is essentially a owned by leyland and macgregor.

Teenagers have been dancing to this track during the end credits and posting the videos to TikTok, LOL.

I'm a marketing guy and use TikTok for work, and I've seen a handful of videos like this:

And here's a comment that made me smile:

'I just started to listening to them thanks to the movie, lol'

BOC IS OFFICIALLY COOL, GUYS.

I was just reflecting on how this echoes another piece of media that led a lot of people to Boards of Canada:

Salad Fingers.

The 00s had David Firth and Beware The Friendly Stranger. Now 20 years later we get Kane Parsons and The Word Becomes Flesh. I'm here for it (and still wishing there could be a physical edition of all of Salad Fingers for my shelf...)

Finally got around to watching Backrooms, and hmm - disappointment. Totally squandered any initial potential for epic deeply unexplainable viewer-headfuckery with a prosaic "it's a spooky, but ultimately real-world phenomenon, with scientists exploring it" trope - much like Lost. Ah well... the credits were good!

Probably won't change your opinion, but it's interesting to note that Kane Parsons is not the only interpreter of the original 4chan post that inspired the Backrooms, he's arguably just the most talented - but he was majorly influenced by the game Half Life, hence the G-men and scientists at the end. There is no canonical lore for the Backrooms yet, it's something of a free-for-all, so the games and various youtube channels are somewhat pulling in different directions.

Ok, I initially did not want to go see backrooms, but my man managed to convince me under the premise of a theatre-speaker-fueled BoC dance party at the end credits. I rationalized it by paying 5$ per minute dance, which is a good deal to me when it comes to the boys.

Spoiler alert the speakers were ass, but was totally blown away by the movie. As someone who was there when backrooms (the concept) got popular, than was horrified when it was absolutely mutilated by mainstream perspective (similarly to EATEOT ((which geeked and tweaked hard when that shit played, my secret obsession!)) and current movie opinion), it was quite lovely to see the film pay dear respect to the concept's roots. Completely subverted my expectations.

Our boys don't give their thumbs-up to nothin'. Reality is the monster.
May your path be ever green and golden.

Yeah I finally gave in and watched it and I agree.

Quite a bloody good film. Did not do what I would think.... Excited for the sequel.
