Seven Forty Seven hidden Beatles sample
Saw this post on Reddit and was surprised it hadn't been discussed here yet.
I was already fascinated by this track but this is just insane. I'd love to know how they came up with this idea of hiding something this deep. Such a mysterious track. And there are probably plenty of other hidden samples we're missing.
Re: Seven Forty Seven hidden Beatles sample
And this is why we'll probably never see any of the older music officially released. No responsible record label would expose themselves to the liability.

Needle in a haystack! Incredible find. I now know what I'll be doing this weekend.

i was wondering about that too but this is on an official warp release -niknak wrote:And this is why we'll probably never see any of the older music officially released. No responsible record label would expose themselves to the liability.
so i wonder if anything will come of this, hopefully its so "manipulated" that it doesn't actually count?
(i have no idea how the copyright and fair use laws work in this context)
Re: Seven Forty Seven hidden Beatles sample
they probably cleared the sample with Apple Records
Re: Seven Forty Seven hidden Beatles sample
I dunno we were still more or less in the wild west of sampling days when that came out.
Lawyers have always tried to go after samples but the general tide on "you can't get release music commercially with uncleared samples" didn't really turn till later.
Something that buried on a non album release they might have just cheekily decided to try and get away with it. Which, you know, lol it's the Beatles. But kudos anyway

Yes, but completely buried. Possibly even the brothers didn't realise it was still way down there! There's no way this was officially cleared.northernlite wrote:i was wondering about that too but this is on an official warp release -niknak wrote:And this is why we'll probably never see any of the older music officially released. They may not even have been aware this was still buried in the mix. Yeah it really was a wild west back in the day. I don't think people realise how things have changed the past 20 years or so. No music using samples gets released without having been gone over with a fine tooth comb by the lawyers, and having everything cleared. Like nothing is used without permission, from a completely obscure artist let alone the Beatles? Holy shit.Negamuse wrote:I dunno we were still more or less in the wild west of sampling days when that came out.

Try and find an example of where they allowed this kind of use (hint - you won't!).
Re: Seven Forty Seven hidden Beatles sample
Let's hope Paul doesn't have a personal vendetta against the brothers after Inferno took over his spot on the album charts?
I can already picture boc in Evel Knievel daredevil glitter carefully sampling the beatles thinking they were going to get away with it.
At any rate, wouldn't a sample -this- buried have a tough time in court? It's damn near some AM radio broadcast sneaking onto the tape level of buried.

So, do you guess they're aware and pleased that a 17 year old secret has now been heard? I don't know quite what to make of it. It's funny and unexpected but the intent remains baffling. I've enjoyed mulling over other potential signals/beacons/messages or gestures in their work. Still stuck on zero discoveries. I don't even mind if some or all of the cultivated mystery is just for the sensation of depth/trails/boundlessness. The feeling that there's more but it won't be given freely. The Doxa Sinistra effect - "that's what you don't know." It's pretty unique and it's purposeful. But finding this... I can't see it as more than a laugh. Or as graffiti. When I rebuilt homes, we once or twice found previous carpenters' dates, names, or a note about the weather written on the framing or the underside of a countertop. A one-way message to the future. Is that how you see this? I think it's bizarre that someone just felt like stretching the song out but they wrote it was because of the mdg hint about a Freddy Mercury clip. I feel weird about this spurring endless "careful" listening at 12 seconds per minute or whatever... But I do enjoy the itchy feeling that their catalog will keep passively revealing more than was known, dug up (harvested) by fans, surprise, surprise, surprise.

The track is building to this swirling crescendo of chaos, right? Which famously, Day In The Life does too. My own thought on why this sample is there buried is to kind of half jokingly imbue 747 with a bit of that energy, even if it's so buried as to be inaudible.AuHr wrote:So, do you guess they're aware and pleased that a 17 year old secret has now been heard? Someone needs to go back and see how much of the track is actually in there, what they showed in the video was just the recognisable quiet bit where Lennon is singing over not much backing. It would be neat if the crescendos line up but I don't see how they could.
But that's not the point really, I think it's just "let's bury this thing in the mix because we're going for the same effect and maybe putting it there will rub off psychically" kind of thing. A little joke or like you say, builder's mark, just to show hands on the tools, show where the craft was.
And as ever, I don't think they care one way or another if we find these things, I think they're put there as part of their process for their own amusement and anything we get out of it is a bonus. Maybe the law on sampling shifting makes it a bit touchy at the record company? But Warp pitch themselves as being a bit punk I'm sure they don't care either. Somewhere a lawyer is oscillating with stress but I think everyone else is likely having a chuckle

Re: Seven Forty Seven hidden Beatles sample
I wonder how the brothers feel about this being found and posted about. I’m not convinced they’d find it amusing that fans were finding things like this, and I don’t think it was meant to be found.
This is potentially a huge legal liability for them, Apple corps are notoriously litigious.

They literally put it in the song, which was publicly released. If you don't want sounds to be found in your album, don't put them in there surely. lol, imagine getting annoyed that someone really listened to your music.Burning Shadow wrote:I wonder how the brothers feel about this being found and posted about. Exactly; this is the “easter egg” kind of sampling, as you won’t hear the sample unless you are determined to find it.Wildfire wrote:They literally put it in the song, which was publicly released.
