An 'Invocation' appreciation thread

I wholeheartedly believe that is some of the best stuff Boards of Canada have to offer. Anyone else like this as much as me?

Perhaps we could discuss the elements of it

It's a very...interesting clip? A good look into what boc has up their sleeves, indeed.

Yeah I agree...

now that I think about this, and the fact that I just read the old topics about it, this 'trailer' could be the harbinger for the next BOC release. Joyrex himself said it might be a trailer for a movie and the brothers have stated a great change so I dont know...

I hate to discuss again new material but you know...thats kinda part of being a fan of the group

granted, but it really didnt have much to do with it, except the bit after the video.

to me it wouldve been scary and awesome to see this as a trailer for geogaddi

This is the closest topic for "Invocation" that I could find so I'm digging it up. (Hope you don't mind...)

I wanted to ask if anyone knows what the symbols are that appear during the "Bears" section of the video. (Honestly, I'm not the only one who sees it right?)

There is a double Q symbol (The Q's are mirror images) some symbols I can't make out, and one looks like a W, V, or X (Or possible combination of all three) BoC Pages don't mention it at all and I was wondering if anyone has possible theories to what they mean.

I always think back to that early Forcefield magazine interview were they seemed excited about bringing out a book and in the process of making a film etc.
Reminds me of reading an interview with Jah Wobble when he laughed about Levene and Lydon in PiL discussing these grand ideas about becoming a multimedia company and getting involved in soundtracks when infact it was either complete b*ll*cks or just wishful thinking on their behalf.

Although if they do have vaults of footage, it 'd be an interesting watch for sure. The music is obviously quite visual with all these great little reference points so I'd imagine any film work would be of interest.

Also, in Invocation are there not little snippets of footage from that Chris Cunningham Italian Telecom Ad which BoC colloborated on?

And also I don't know if this is worth mentioning or even true to be honest, but if I remember rightly on one of the forums (possibly the yahoo forum or one of those old ones I can't remember) back around or maybe before the Geogaddi era there was some random guy who claimed to have met BoC in New Zealand filming something. I definitely did not imagine reading this...hehe. Although as with alot of things it could be complete b*ll*cks made up by some fella on a forum. Anyone remember these claims?

A whole album set to footage like the stuff in Invocation would be magic. I understand the few shows they did featured similar visuals.

Also being from NZ I'm always intrigued by the BOC/NZ connection. I read somewhere that one of the brothers lived here for a while. Anyone have any other info regarding this?

the only information that they were living in new zealand was their myspace page location being changed. it was set as nz for a good while before being changed back to UK. it now states they live in the USA...whether or not this is true, who knows! slightly off topic - there were various places in nz that gave me that 'boc' vibe...Waipoua Forest being the most memorable.

It was mentioned in the interview they did for The Wire back in 2005. Mike was apparently talking about moving there.

None apart from that unfortunately. But it's a beautiful country and in my opinion having spent a few weeks there, to me everything about the landscape and the overall vibe of NZ cries out BoC. Blasting their tracks while travelling around there seemed be somehow appropriate. You're a lucky bunch

Waipoua Forest...yeah that place is epic. Was up there last year touring around Northland in a campervan. Apparently most of Northland was once covered in those giant Kauri forests.

I'd love to go to the giant redwood forests in California one day.

I find the video to be disturbing, beautiful and seductive. Fairly representative of BOC. They like to go to places in your mind and subconscious that you thought nobody else knew of. Not to sound weird or fanboyish. Their music is at turns pretty, subterranean, mystifying, sidewinding, baffling, lush, lurking, bright, hypnotizing.

Yeah. Good video. They were really laying on the subliminal/satanic thing pretty thick. Maybe self consciously so...

it's almost a year since i ventured around New Zealand, truly beautiful place. the forests in California are also on my list...the redwood in Rotorua was enough to get me excited!

Some things I've noticed when checking out the video again:

During the section of the "Teddy Bear's Picnic" sample, there are bears floating around the screen (along with the 666 bit).

There are three cells that make a kind-of angry Kabuki mask that appears to be opening its mouth (around :53).

Probably old news. Just thought that it was some pretty clever work that I hadn't caught before!

I'm sure this must be old news, and its not exactly hidden, but the letters TCR on the video time-counter keep flickering and changing to the word KILL!

Great observation. This is not exactly hidden either but through countless hours of independent research, I've come to the conclusion that the final 20 seconds or so are from a porno flick. I'll have to watch it a few times again to be sure.
