Great Review of BOC's Why? Remix

Post by streamrunner »

the entire review is of the Why? EP is here:

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/r ... s-ep-us-eu

and below is the paragraph from the review pertaining to the BOC remix:

To further twist bullyish tension burns on the arms of fans, The Hollows EPs feature two remixes of tracks from the upcoming Alopecia. Dntel's Anticon EP track returns to his cuddly headphone-techno roots with its insistent, espionage-evoking beat. Wolf's steadier, typical hip-hop delivery makes what could be an MOR move for both into a mind meld instead. But Boards of Canada, with the understated but insistent loping beat they add to "Good Friday", make you wonder why they're not working with more rappers. They bring a newfound clarity and movement to Wolf's words, and even though he's working a deadpan monotone, BoC manage to add several different textures without ever stepping on his toes. Though they've remixed the Anticon roster before, it's a tantalizing step outside of BoC's comfort zone, and an amazingly sensitive collaboration, over which Wolf leabes some provocative call-outs and males plain-faced admittance of the therapeutic value of his lyrics ("shit I wouldn't even admit to my head-shrinker"). The slinky beat and restrained horns make for a track that sounds sun-kissed and debauched all at once.

Great link, thanks.

Need to get the EP for the original, if not only to hear the remix on vinyl.

Good review and great props to BoC.

I swear though, every time I read a Pitchfork review, I get the feeling that the writer just graduated his creative writing course and is in love with his thesaurus.

Ahh, I didn't look at the tracklist of the EP. March isn't too far away.

EDIT: anyone care to share a copy of the Broken Drum remix to keep me going?

FUCK this track is good. The lyrics are finally sitting well with me, allowing me to fully enjoy the song. I would kill to get a copy of this sans vocals though...

Still my fave BoC remix. Probably because I think Yoni Wolf of Why? is a genius and I'm a huge anticon. nut in general..may this track never die! :P

For Alopecia, there were some remixes done. How did it come that Boards of Canada remixed one of your songs?

I just asked them if they wanted to do it, and they said they'd do it. I'd known them for a few years. I met them in 2002 in Edinburgh, Scotland and Birmingham, England. They're really cool guys and really reclusive. But they did a remix for one of my older bands, Clouddead, and I've been in contact with them here and there throughout the years. I asked if they had any interest, and they were like, "Fuck yeah, let's do it."
saw this in a recent article:

And I love love love that funky ass bass line.

I noticed that my vinyl copy is looking like it's having a bad reaction to the plastic sleeve, it's looking oddly discoloured. Am I alone with this?

Oh my god, really better than the cLOUDDEAD - Dead Dogs Two BoC remix? That actually holds the position of best song I've ever heard in my life.

Well, that comes in at a close second. I love cLOUDDEAD as much as anything Yoni, Dose or Nosdam have done before or since. TBH tho, I don't bother rating BoC remixes one above the other, I love them all equally because there isnt' a single bad one. Keep in mind, up until the point the Why? remix was released, I probably would have said the cLOUDDEAD mix as my fave..but that was then.

Still love those flutes tho...

new version of good friday. (pretty much the same, just the rap re-done, and a horribly abrupt ending)
