Back in about 1992, me and my University mates (yes, I AM that old) formed a Metal/Grunge covers band. We had hair down to our arses, wore Black and little else other than Black, had very, VERY silly spikey BC Rich guitars and had probably the stupiest name of all-time (brace yourself) - Rehearsal For Murder.
We were the worst band in the World, and nothing you can say will persuade me otherwise.
We actually had an incredible guitarist called Andy, but rather than bring our overall standard up, we made him play drums instead. Seriously, we made Spinal Tap look talented. In our first gig, we opened by murdering Cowboys From Hell by Pantera. Andy had borrowed a double-kick pedal for the bass drum so he could do the full speed kicks. 2 seconds into the intro and the pedal breaks entirely with a spectacular CLUNK which the whole room must have heard. I spent the entire gig unable to hear a damn thing out of my floor monitors - screaming at the soundman to turn me up (he must have thought I was a right prima donna) so I eventually had to turn my back to the audience so I could listen to my Amp rather than guess what I was playing. The audience probably thought it was some Sex Pistols-esque "Fuck-you" to them, but in fact I just couldn't hear anything I was playing.
However, all of this pales into insignificance once you hear about our rehearsal sessions. Being students we were continually broke, so we hired the cheapest rooms we could find. They had a drum kits, but no cymbals. Andy was a guitar player, not a drummer, so didn't own any. We could usually hire a set from the local pub, but on several occasions we couldn't get our hands on them. The memory of Andy hitting thin air instead of a crash cymbal and yelling "CRASH!", or pretending to tap out a rhythm on his invisible Ride Cymbal and miming the sounds while we butchered the latest Soundgarden track...
Ah! Happy days. Happy, but crap.

Awesome story, Mexicola. That reminds me of the time I tried to form a band with my friend Audrey.Mexicola wrote:Back in about 1992
For me, this happened back in high school, round about 2002 or so (it always makes things seem so much farther apart when you mention what leg of school you were in during the year). Me and Audrey were the only two in the band who were engrossed enough in developing our musical talents to actually have the dedication in us to be in a band, but we didn't have a clue what we were doing. She was a Radiohead-loving singer-songwriter type and I was still messing around on Floops trying to sound like some industrial noise monster like Converter. So i was programming drums and pads and atmospherics, Audrey was on lead guitar and vocals, and our rhythm guitarist and bassist were two friendly acquaintances from school who we had nothing in common with musically. Our guitarist Ann liked Avril and dressing like Avril, which I resented since I had gotten over my Hot Topic phase WEEKS and WEEKS ago and was now far more mature. She also didn't know how to play guitar. Like, literally, she was going to learn while she was in the band. Our bassist was kind of a beginner too, not as much so, but still.
At any rate, what wound up happening was Audrey and I meeting several times and dishing about my music and what the band should be like. At the end of a couple months, the band met (after weeks of trying to get our other two members to want to come rehearse) and rehearsed a song. It was Audrey copycatting Radiohead's vocal styles and frowny-town sound, me doing something utterly boring with the most utterly boring drumbeat in existence, our bassist managing to hit the notes most of the time (there were two in the whole song), and Ann standing around looking totally rebellious. Our parents listened in. They acted impressed. There were no more rehearsals after that. We decided to break up, amazingly.
