How do people react when they hear BoC for the first time?

Post by ninetyoneplus »

I thought this would be a fun thread to start. I've listened to BoC so much that I've forgotten how unusual it is in comparison to "mainstream" music. So, when I play BoC for people sometimes I get reactions that are funny/interesting. How about you guys?

"It sounds like music for movies." (Roygbiv)
"The synths remind me of United Airlines commercials" (Alpha and Omega)
"It's so scratchy!"- my mom (Eagle in Your Mind)

Most people around me are not as music obsessed as I am, so usually when I play BoC to someone they either don't understand what is supposed to be special about it, or they think it's ok/nice, or they draw strange comparisons such as "this sounds a little like Moby". A lot of people seem to dig The Campfire Headphase though.

Comparisons about Moby come up frequently as well. But, yes, I feel like when people say they like it, it is only so that I am not offended. It kinda pisses me off.

I get a lot of "it sounds like the records skipping" for a lot of my music... 8)

It also puts a lot of people to sleep I've noticed, especially when they're driving.

The general concensus I get from mates is that it's kind of weird. Dayvan Cowboy proves pretty popular though. I don't know anyone directly who has been struck by BoC on first listen in the same way as I was. I still remember where I was and what I was doing ghe first time I heard BoC in the same way as you remember for those major historic events that happen in your lifetime. I've never been struck in the same way by any other piece of music as I was by roygbiv.

I have a fair amount of friends who are pretty keen on music, so generally I get a slightly more positive reaction (and usually it's not me that's introducing them to BoC, but they know I'm a big fan so when they do hear it for the first time they talk to me about it). the consensus on geogaddi is that it blows one's mind.

i missed out on getting my mind blown by geogaddi since MY golden BoC experience was with MHTRTC, and so I was kind of expecting more of that and was pretty ambivalent towards what i heard on geogaddi.

The closest thing to a positive reaction I had was when I loaned a guy MHTR and he said "dude it's like falling asleep in class during a boring wild america show on discovery channel and dreaming about said show but it's all trippy." And actually despite him trying to be a bit negative about it, the description was quite spot on.

Generally when people I know comment on electronic stuff they say it is all boring, the same and too repetitive. Which I find odd because basically all music follows structural patterns of some sort. My sister called Mrs. Jynx elevator music though, that made me sad. :(

Alot of my mates are into pop/rnb stuff. And i haven't made them listen to Boards yet (will do someday)

However, i was playing some BoC in class once, on the computer, and my teacher seemed pretty interested, and wanted to hear more. She wanted me to make a CD full of music for her!

I never got round to it though :( Which was ashame, because she was quite MILF-ish

Make CD = Sex

Campfire Headphase for most, especiallly those who grew up listening to new wave and alternative rock (Depeche Mode, The Cure, etc etc)

my bf calls says stuff like: ugh, it's just boring ambient music (lol)

my sister hates it coz it puts in a bad place (rofl)

sleeping at the wheel whilst listening to BOC = too funny. Haven't tried that yet. Next time I go out of town though, I will.. I bet I'd feel quite elated

My same friend a few months later "OMG I NEED TO DOWNLOAD EVERYTHING THAT IS BOC"

Also, her brother: "its okay for, like, background music or something, but its weird that people listen to it regularly"
