The Caretaker

Anyone heard of this guy? I've been listening to some of his music after I've recently discovered him on Last.fm and it's fantastic. His main inspiration being the ballroom scene from The Shining , which happens to be my favorite movie

, drew me into this dark ambient/spooky music all that much more. He gives away a lot of his music on his website for free:

My friend who I've been collaborating with gave me a copy of Persistent Repetition Of Phrases yesterday as inspiration for our project together and it's lovely stuff. I can let it run in the background while I work and go about my day and it adds just a little spookiness to it all.

Had a mailshot today from James Kirby - aka: The Caretaker.

It links to an enlightening piece he's written over on Brainwashed a few days ago. Gives an interesting angle on the whole free download culture, looking at the effect it's had on both the consumer and the artist, aside from the usual financial impact.

Well worth a read, there are interesting parallels to be drawn with BOC I feel here, in terms of the 'Old Tunes', not to mention their attitude towards the internet generally I feel.

That was a great article; Brilliant and inspiring. I could really relate to it too. It seems almost impossible to get listeners online, but I can't blame anyone.

ive been following the caretaker and the works of James Kirby for a good while now and im obsessed with his sound, the V/vm stuff is abit of a piss take by the sounds of it but the caretaker is sheer lush and beauty with a haunted chilling effect to it also. So many emotions wrapped up under his Caretaker stuff. The More Caretaker the better!

Just watched the documentary this album was made for...

Really unusually and beguiling piece of work, and I'm now fascinated by W.G. Sebald and am ordering 'Rings of Saturn'.

Has anyone else seen this film or read Sebald? Would be interested to hear.

Please take the time to see this film if you can. I thought it was wonderful.

It's old Leyland Kirby's 40th birthday today and to celebrate, he's released a THREE HOUR album for download - totally free gratis. What a guy!

EDIT: his email today also made mention of reissuing his older works, including the much sought-after An Empty Bliss Beyond This World, which is currently making Geogaddi look cheap on the 2nd hand market.
