Anyone ever notice

Post by Kamas009 »

In "An eagle in your mind" the voice that's talking about some non sense (I wish I knew what the hell he was saying.) Anyways, anyone ever notice how it gives the sensation of the voice speaking above you? It trips me out everytime I hear it, Gah it's just so awesome all the little things like that!

check bocpages.org discography for the words spoken....but yes, i agree, the voice is disturbing yet so awesome with that amazingly dark melody and crazy drum pattern.

Doesn't really sound above me to me. What are you listening it with? headphones, speakers? Which type of headphones/speakers? Whats the setup?

Taken from BoC Pages:

"Holts are nearly always close to the sea,
fallen boulders, old ruins, and cliffs,
all atop the sand edifice,
high above the sea:
a safe place for cubs.
We wait ... tense. We're disappointed.
She leaves her [?] to look for [others?]
The holts are evenly spaced, about 5 meters apart,
Only enough to fool the passers-by, or so they advertise
I love you"

It's all tentative, no one knows for sure (until a fanatic digs up the original documentary...)

Actually I think I know what it's from. I am in the midst of buying the dvd. I am almost 100% sure it's from the 1974 tv show The Zoo Gang: EP 5 The Counterfeit Trap and the person speaking is Philip Madoc. On the other hand digging up samples BoC has used takes away from the music, I like to make up my own thoughts on what it is, so sometimes I kick myself for not letting it go and to just let it soak, nothing more. Oh well.

That would be a great find, but it would ruin the mystery for me if it was indeed what they sampled it from.

and to who asked what setup I use, I'm using some fairly expensive headphones so everything sounds like it was mastered and recorded by god. Turtle Beach to be exact.

Might be my favourite track ever by BoC... or one of my favs anyway. I just love the sound of the voice, so deep and all, I can see why you think it's coming from above. The line "fallen boulders, old ruins, and cliffs" is so evocative, it reminds me of things I haven't lived. Well, Boards of Canada.

And could someone here tell me what is a "holt"? I've checked and it doesn't really make sense to me.

Seriously? I for one would be interested to hear the original. How did you manage to track this down?

I just watched that episode (I <3 the internet), it's not in there. What led you to believe it was this? Could it be a different episode?

Found a torrent of this but haven't watched yet. Bummer that the sample's not in there.

• Season 1

1 1-01 05/Apr/74 Revenge: Post Dated
2 1-02 12/Apr/74 Mindless Murder
3 1-03 19/Apr/74 African Misfire
4 1-04 26/Apr/74 The Counterfeit Trap
5 1-05 03/May/74 The Lion Hunt
6 1-06 10/May/74 The Twisted Cross

He said EP 5 but named it The Counterfeit Trap which is actually EP 4.

So if it's indeed EP 5 it would be wise to view The Lion Hunt episode as wel...

Possibly, but Philip Madoc is only in The Counterfeit Trap, which is who he thought it was.

I've read on bocpages that in the past mdg has said
mdg wrote:Boards of Canada have obviously used a lot of speech samples in their work over the years, such as the Leslie Nielsen sample in "Dandelion", the "Energy Warning" speech, the "From One Source All Things Depend" speech, etc.. But even with speech samples, much of it is created by BOC collaborating with various friends (for example half of the speech on "Geogaddi" was custom-done, and again much of "Music Has The Right To Children")
Maybe it's just wishful thinking that it's Philip Madoc and it's actually just one of boc's friends?

I understand that they use sampled speech from their own recordings, I get it. But they also sample a lot of tv show and movie speech. So I would say no, it's obviously from a doc on animals or something else like that because he is talking about "Holts" which is a small den that some animals live in. So I would search Philip Madoc's narrations on animal docs.
