Usual caveat before I begin: I've tried to search a specific discussion thread for this song and not found it, so apologies if this one has been done before.

This is one of my favourites from the Old Tunes, and one of their best vignette pieces, IMO. It reminds me very strongly of Pink Floyd's music, for some reason. It conveys a certain kind of melancholy, the sound of resignation - perhaps fatalism? - regret and a type of nostalgia where you so desperately want to return to past times, and yet of course you never can.

I can make out the male voice sample of course, but I have been trying to decipher the female voice sample, which sounds to me like this:

"Yes, er, what time is er, sticky fingers?"

...which is clearly wrong. If anyone could suggest a better alternative I'd be interested.

Really started appreciating this song recently. I agree something about it sounds so melancholic and serene.

It reminds me a bit of Audiotrack 14A, only more realised and less Depeche Mode-y.

It reminds me of good interlude music between shows on TV. "You're watching 'Iced Cooly Beatniks", only on B.O.C." *jingle plays*

After the song, Peace-Tony-Devil are the string of commercials. It makes sense to me.

My brother plays this song a lot and we started to become curious about the line in the beginning. After some searching I think I may have narrowed down who it is. I'm not sure where it's from, though.

The person talking in the beginning of the song is referring to Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, The Fireballs, and The String-A-Longs. They're all musical artists who recorded at the Norman Petty Studio in Clovis, New Mexico (In the 50s and 60s). The studio has been well taken care of and still has all the original equipment and is open for tours.

A man named David Bigham was staffed at the Norman Petty Studio as a backup vocalist. He has done backup vocals for some of Ray Orbison and Buddy Holly's songs. David Bigham is retired and lives in Clovis, New Mexico. I think he still visits the studio and helps with tours and events etc. He has also given some interviews.
