Hey everyone, hope you dont mind a newbie making a thread :p
I just wondered if anyone has info on a Warp Record contract. For example, an act like Hudson Mohawke, Bibio, Clark and BOC ....is it paid well and what would be the average annual income be from this contract.
The reason I am asking is that it is closely related to my thesis and its an interesting subject too.
I read in an interview with Steve Beckett that Richard David James (Aphex Twin) rejects interviews etc but still doesnt have to 'have a proper job'.

Third, As far as an actual annual income these artists make based on a contract? Who knows... I doubt it's some big pay day. The pay day for the artist is more or less the fact that their music is being put out by a well known label. In other words, I don't know, but I highly doubt it's anything to live off of for a long period of time. If you're not touring and not selling merch, you're generally not making a lot of money.

I think it might depend on the artist. My friend managed to chat to Tim Exile who is signed to Warp and he didn't seem too stoked about it from what he was saying. He said they're just a record label at the end of the day with deadlines and budgets!

yeah, they are a business. i bet that their initial pressings are around 10k for cds and a few thousand for vinyl. not much room for serious profit for the artist. ive always heard bands make their money touring and selling merch. labels make quite a bit of their income these days from licensing too. get yr music in a verizon ad, youll be golden for a bit. it works. some labels make that their priority. lots of well known bands still have to work day jobs or just live spartan lives. some freelance and produce.
i remember reading something about deerhoof quitting their day jobs right after opening for radiohead in 06 or 07. they had been a larger band for a while by then. i bet most people just work admin jobs at uni's or marketing firms and keep their heads down and make music. some probably live spartan lives from it. some probably invest too. i know there are no specifics there, but just my viewpoint.

I've two conference from Matmos (Matador Records) & Mouse on Mars & they all said they weren't making any money. If I remember well, the guys from Matmos are working in universities. I don't know what Mouse on Mars are doing for a living, they didn't said anything about it.

yeah, the matmos guys probably make a great living, they are at some top schools out east!
Thanks for the input, yes its ashame the artists dont get enough money to concentrate solely on the music. If anyone finds out how I could obtain Warp record sales, I would love to know.
If anyone is interested, I had a response from BOC direct following my plea for a charity cause I work on. I did not want to ask questions for my research but thought it would be nice to add to my thesis. I am only interested in my questions if they are existing in the public domain. Marcus was a gentleman and very nice BTW

I get about £40 per week, but its not pocket money. Its disability allowance as I am wheelchair bound. I dont usually respond to internet bullies, so this is my last response on the matter.

Oh dear, its really nothing much. I just got in touch via warp in London to help with my thesis and as a foot note to ask if he could mention Autism.org in his next linear notes - a little cheeky but harmless (A charity I help with BTW).
Naturally I dont expect anything such as that to materialise, but it was nice to get a response. Anyway, a little off topic, so sorry for that.
I'm not bullying you shoe lace, though I agree my responses were a bit gruff and moody, I just think asking people what wages they take home is a bit personal and tbh none of anyone elses business. Especially if you don't know them. As you say it's best if we leave it there.
