As for Ponyo... I believe this is the first one that's directed by Miyazaki's son rather than Miyazaki himself, isn't it? Kinda disappointing, but I kind of figured that if it wasn't directed by Miyazaki himself it wouldn't be as good.

Ponyo was disappointing, yes. It started off well enough, had everything it needed to become and enduring classic of the Ghibli canon, but fell flat on it's face 3/4ths through. I can't recommend it to anyone. Return of the Cat and Tales from Earthsea are similarly lackluster.

All I meant was generally, anime is based off a manga. It is rare for an anime to come out of thin air. A manga produced after the anime is just to further line the producers pockets, it seems.
