When MHTRTC came out, I just remember thinking 3 things:
1. brilliant
2. this is a refinement, in some ways, of the kinds of things that Tortoise was doing.
3. everything that they put forth was/is well thought-out. Everything in the scheme of their music serves a purpose, no filler.

warphead: Yeah, I didn't take to it right away (unlike you). Strangely, everything before this one clicked instantly - but this was the one that took some time ...

I believe the 'secret weapon' (among a few) could very well be the numerous filters they run their sounds through. Filter a sound over & over, through different permutations, and the sound *sounds like* something alien.
