IMO Even thought Dayvan Cowboy and Peacock Tail are absolutely MINT, I think BoC has more
potential in the other direction. Besides, synths are more nostalgic!
As far as bands go, usually they progress from one style to another, and Boards is one of the best examples of this happening. If you have ever listened to their stuff from Old Tunes you can interpret that their album Boc Maxima is a large representation of their sound just before they went major.
Then, MHTRTC has a few of the songs from Maxima but instead sides for a more warm and colorful style of electronic synths, but still in their ambient stage.
Geogaddi was released, and this album not only gives you a glimpse of who they were, but what they would eventually become as music artists. This is practically where their ambient sound came into a large effect near the end of that album.
Then TCH came out, and you could hear a bit of the influence from the last album, but definitely not as much as Geogaddi's relationship to MHTRTC.
What is so important for Boards about this album is that TCH represents a brand new dierection for Boards. I get the feeling from this album that they are not completely ditching their old sound, but instead revitalizing it. There is a strong pull, a feeling of "letting go" and floating out among the cosmos. The two mainstream hits from this album were Chromakey Dreamcoat and Dayvan Cowboy, which both contain the floating element that I mentioned earlier, but I challenge you to take a look at Tears and Farewell at the end of the album. There is definitely a new sound in there, a new feel, but still combined with their same nostalgic and ambient touch.
Also, in a music theory scope, their chord structures have drastically been changed too. I think that Boards have always been dedicated to an experience on an emotional level, but they are now alluding to different things and doing it in different ways.
I think that this is Boards way of saying that it's time for a change of pace in their music, and that this is the way that they are going about doing it. Because if there is one thing in any art that makes you feel bad, it's doing the same thing twice.
From a retrospective glance, I feel that this gives Boards lots of depth not only in music but in character.
As for the new album, we may expect to see a brand new style that we haven't heard before, a build on their TCH style, or a new approach from their old style. But, from my point of view, I would have to predict that it would either be the first two, but I digress: I have had weird experiences with psychic activities, but this does not mean that I can predict the future.
(EDIT: had to change THC to TCH in the last paragraph. I don't intend to mix up the active chemical in weed with Boards, but they do mix well together!)
