I'm sorry to dig this up from the grave but I seriously disagree. There is plenty of diversity in sound- of course not from your typical nothing-great-conventional-rock-band because they don't actually understand music but there is plenty of rock oriented stuff with a ton of diversity. The diversity is in the tone, the effects, the recording space, the mood, the melody, and basically anything else that comes into play while recording. Queens is a very good example of a band that explores all of these things. You need to listen for them.
Tom waits is another one.

Dude, I don't even have this opinion very firmly any more and I don't know a lot about QoTSA. Probably not a good idea to dig things up.
Anyways, if I recall I was talking more about rock music as a whole, not this particular band.
