Very true and I imagine they use the same synth for many bass sounds. Sh101 I am assuming.
I get 99% there with SH09.

Yeah I can get it with my SH101, but I've also come very close with a hardware digital synth (Novation KS rack)

Being mindlessly positive about everything ends up creating an echo chamber full of people churning out dull copies that aren't as good as the original. Negative feedback is an important part of existing as a creative adult in this world.

I'm sure you don't hold the same standards for things you don't like, anyway.

I can't really get on my high horse about this though, because I totally jocked their flute bounceback technique. In all fairness I probably would have figured it out accidentally eventually since my "gear" basically consists of a handheld recorder and a ghetto blaster.

whos saying its mindless? negative feedback of "fuckin' lame"'s isnt important to anyone other that the writer of said comments. plus, have you ever been on the receiving end of anything like that? it sucks! critique is different from criticism. im not for people copying anyone really, but its all art is... get used to it. just keep the overly succinct bad vibes to yrselves... (all that being said, i havent watched these yet, just bookmarked for later)

Sorry, first post here - couldn't resist chipping in. So, hello.

Even my Roland Gaia did some passable BOC-type stuff, just added a bit of LFO>pitch to a saw wave, et voila.

The Prophet 08's even better (by several light years). ;-)

Though it wasn't cheap, mind. :-(

the gaia board is an interesting lil machine. one of the better digital modeling ones for how inexpensive they can be. oh man, the prophet 08! one of the best current boards around. i have an old sixtrak, an original ms-20 a poly 800 myself. i kind of want to get a small digital board again for touring like a novation or something.

No unfortunately not, it's all on cassette but I hope to have it up soon. I've learned a lot doing the bounceback method of recording, but at this point I would be very happy with having atleast a 4 track.

In my early days making music (the examples are unfortunately lost) I sometimes had to improvise with a bounceback sort of thing. I'd record myself playing guitar with my phone, then hold the computer microphone up to the phone and press play.

Ridiculously lo-fi. I can't remember if it sounded cool.

Yeah I just record whatever I want lowest in the mix or the most distorted first (if there's any percussion it goes here. I suck at drums and I don't even use drums, it's usually me just banging on something) then I play it back and record myself playing along with the first recording (I'll usually put in concertina or recorder or vocals here) then play the new recording back while I play alongside that, you get the picture...

It has it's charm as well as it's limitations. Fwiw my music ain't all that bocish except "in spirit" i guess. It's not electronic music atleast.

That's a nice wee set up you have there, wouldn't mind a Poly 800 myself - but the Prophet will "have to do". ;-)

I also picked up an immaculate used Alesis Ion a few months ago - it's REALLY nice actually. Haven't really dug into it as much as I'd like but I can see already it's VERY capable of some nice 101/Juno-type sounds - which would be handy if you're after that BOC sound.

It's interesting also (well, kind of) how I got into Look Around You at around the same time as I did BOC - only to find Robert and Peter from Look Around You are HUGE BOC fans, which you can definitely hear on the DVD menu/programme soundtrack. Great stuff.

What ARE birds? We just don't know.
