In my early days making music (the examples are unfortunately lost) I sometimes had to improvise with a bounceback sort of thing. I'd record myself playing guitar with my phone, then hold the computer microphone up to the phone and press play.

Ridiculously lo-fi. I can't remember if it sounded cool.

Wow. This post makes me feel old. In my early days of making music, even the notion of recording anything on a phone would seem too silly to be futuristic.

Now I love BoC and all, really I do, so don't get offended when I say this:
BoC didn't invent bounce backs, recording through the air, tape saturation, Wobbly analog synth melodies, or wobbly guitar.

I know that, I've been doing it since I was a kid and had two recorders. I just meant specifically shredding the sound of flutes, which I liked the sound of in Julie and Candy. They're probably not the first ones to do that either, but that's the song I heard where I was like "I want to use that.

I was first accused of ripping off BoC when I first started recording synth from tape through the air to tape. A positive outcome of this, was that it lead me to check out this band called BoC, who I thought were ok at first.

If I'm honest, I was just trying to recreate the tone from my old demos, and if anything, I was going for a William Basinski type of vibe.


I remember when Campfire came out one of the Sandison's (can't remember which) said in an interview that people shouldn't try to copy their wobbly guitar sound. That annoyed me big time, and stuck in my head to this day.

I guess it's just a delicate balance of using different techniques to get at the sound you hear in your head. There's not much under the sun that's new, so of course in every art form you're going to he learning from artists who have gone before you. Sometimes it comes across as really hamhanded though. Like painfully hamhanded.

But look at BoC. I can hear a lot of MBV influence in their music, but I'd never say "oh god what a ripoff". They took some of that influence and reacted to it in their own way.

i have a mc202 and a midiverb and together they make the 90's warp sound so nicely.

cant wait to hear some of the new tracks, some of those arpeggiated synths i was hearing...

surely they've continued to collect gear over the years, wonder how different the setup is now

seriously a sh101 and akai s1000. especially the s1000 really does the boc sound up.

That Poly61 looks like a real pain to program

It is hard to program compared to a Juno 60, its contemporary. Some have circuit bent the LFO and filters on the Poly but then you ruin the value of it. But I guess a full mint Poly 61 is only $350 so what the hell.
