As I mentioned in the Stanley Kubrick thread, Carpenter is one of ultra-fave directors. Since I was in my pre-teens I became a fan, and remain one to this day. It's sad that his movies kind of took a turn for the worse in the last decade (Ghosts of Mars, I'm looking at you) and are pretty much non-existent now..I watched The Ward, and while it was a decent film it just didn't have the impact I was hoping for. Both of his Masters of Horror episodes were awesome, worth checking out if you haven't seen them! For me, his 1980's work will remain his "Golden Age"...The Thing, They Live, Prince of Darkness, Escape from NY, Big Trouble in Little China (I love that movie WAYYYY too much lol)..also a huge fan of In the Mouth of Madness, Dark Star and Halloween, obviously..his soundtrack work is wonderful and as much a part of the film as the visual aspect. I keep hoping one day he'll come back and blow our minds again with an original, creative film. Until then?

I'm glad Mike and Marcus agree with meShortwave wrote:(preparing to be ignored as usually here... ;D)
Carpenter was a great director, but musically speaking I don't think he was that great to be assumed as an "influence". His music was derivative and fairly cheap, that was a poor concept of "synthy darkness" which made sense only as a soundtrack to his movies. There's a reason if, well, he became a director first, than a composer. If we want to take "dark synth music" we should refer to proper composers then, e.g. some Tangerine Dream, or some more experimental Moroder, or even Brian Eno, or all the Italian score composers of 70s/80s horror and noir movies (movies again here, but at least, they were proper composers).
"A few people have noticed the arpeggiated synth bits have a sort of John Carpenter feel ...
Sandison: There are quite a few influences on this record. Carpenter is kind of an easy reference point for most people though I'd say the main ones would be Fabio Frizzi, John Harrison and Mark Isham. We're very much into grim 70s and 80s movie soundtracks so there are maybe nods to composers such as Stefano Mainetti, Riz Ortolani, Paul Giovanni, Wendy Carlos, even Michael Nyman."

Shortwave, i totally agree!
I was searching a thread about influence of Boc on TH, specially Fabio Frizzi.
So just wanted to post here the Main title of Zombi 2 by Lucio Fulci (the scene with the shark is amazing!)
Make me think at RFTD (or vice versa)
(Don't know if it has been posted somewhere else, if it's the case, really sorry.)

Cheers for posting this! I loved this film when I was in my teens - caught it late on tv one night and couldn't stop watching it. Had this track stuck in my head for days so had to buy it on VHSchalope wrote:Shortwave, i totally agree!

The shark scene is a good one, agreed. And of course, let's not forget the eye and the shard of door....

Resident Advisor has a good Alan Howarth (Carpenter's accomplice) podcast download.

I have to say that, not just from this topic but from the site as a whole I've discovered loads of new music, this topic alone, Unit Black Flight and the Beyond the Black Rainbow soundtrack.
Regards to John Carpenter, the Escape from New York soundtrack is a classic, nearly as good as my all time favorite soundtrack by Vangelis, Bladerunner (Esper edition)
