Isn't there a bit of a distinction between "UK Dubstep" and well....all the rest of it? Seems like all the dubstep I hear from the UK is more diverse and less formulaic and then there is the forumulaic shit I hear all over the TV and even in adverts made by thte government here in the US:

http://venturebeat.com/2013/02/12/obama ... n-address/

...so vile.

I don't get into a lot of dubstep from either side of the pond as it were but like what I hear from Boxcutter, Meat Beat Manifesto, and I noticed Luke Vibert even through his hat in the dubstep ring with some of the tracks on We Hear You.

So yeah....another abused genre label I guess.

This was what I meant about 2 dubsteps that dont resemble each other. BOC and ^ are sooooo different, and its precisely that wide a variance in dubstep. I'm bettin one can call skyliner dubstep and be safe, but I mean dubstep 1, not dubstep 2^.

Im stickin to that even if boc themselves say no, but I bet they say duh.

I dunno man, dubstep was around '08 and '09 for me, i've lost interest now, i'd never describe any BoC stuff as dubstep. It's just electronica or electronic music, i wouldn't start calling it something different just because a new term was being bandied about nowadays

Melts wrote:iec and boq... I definitely agree, but heres what I remind myself:

If I am a professional percussion instructor and a kid comes in for a class and says "Teach me how to play dubstep on a kit!" I'd like to at least know where to start let alone know what the kid meant. You can put swing drums to cannibalcorpse and to the teacher, thats not DM its swing.

this issue, in this example is resolved by (sliently) recognizing the word dubstep means nothing, asking the kid who wants to learn for an example or a list of artists, and moving from there. it's been established that both of you could have entirely different definitions of "dubstep", be thinking of two entirely different sounding genres with different roots, and still each be somewhat correct in some context.

if someone came in and asked me how to play indie music, i'd also have no idea where to start. but that's because the word 'indie' as a music descriptor means everything and nothing. but mostly nothing. same with dubstep.

also wait is anyone even actually giving rolling stone the time of day? for serious?

but see, you guys still imagining skrillex. Should be imagining a specific beat. Like - "four to the floor". Any genre can be 4 to floor. bass on 1234, snare on 2,4. Any genre can be dubstep because dubstep is bass 1 snare 3. See? This is where you lose me, that its "new" or mean nothing. no, bass1 snare3 is old and specific meaning. Boc can utilize either and sound boc. Its percussion people. The "sound" you cant shake as ALL dub, is just one style of dub. BOC can use bass1 snare 3 cant they? Then thats dub(142-147bpm). If the boc track goes bass1 bass2 bass3 bass 4, its not dub, it 4tofloor.

u Feel me?

Nope, that just sounds like a very clinical unfeeling way of describing...well....anything. These words normally have more association than that, especially a particular scene, a set of influences and some sort of recognised style.

*sigh*
Isn't dubstep, originally, essentially "Sincere" done a-la "Meets Rockers Uptown" with influences from dnb/jungle )what with the specific waveforms of bass, the influence from newer trends in hip hop and house (2step, juke, trap), as well the urban feeling)?
I mean, isn't Basefree more dubstep than any of the tracks mentioned in the OP?
Even if we could (we really could) debate what the hell a specific MICROGENRE of music exactly is, genres are really just there to make shopping easier.
Anyhow, summarise how much discussion of BoC is actually being done in this thread

These are some good tracks that the vast majority of ignorant tards would call "Dubstep".

It isn't dubstep, it's just electronic music.

no offense mate but those songs could lead people in the wrong direction, this is what id call dubstep

for those who dont know, or those who have only heard dubstep through media its approx 140 bpm.
Originally came from a mixture of dnb, jungle and more so garage and 2step hence the awesome shuffles. Genre blew the fuck up as America took hold of it, the forward thinking american producers have been pushed aside and the genre is in a horrible state as people think that the bro sound is good.
Its gone on to spawn a horrible brother in Trap.
It helps to learn about how hardcore turned to jungle then to dnb and how garage evolved to get a good understanding of the genre. sad how its down the drain
Most of the decent labels have moved on to more experimental techno which is great.

Certain boc tracks could be identified as dubstep, but they also fit more closely with the Autonomic sound tempo and vibe wise. But they've always used a lot of bass in their tracks, probably a bit ahead of its time. The production they were pulling out years is where people are getting to now with probably a more modern studio setup. IMO boc are pioneers in electronic production for this reason

http://www.club-autonomic.com/ - educate, the mixes are great, normally they have an influences section that quite often feature BOC and other 90's Warp and IDM artists. Any fans of boc will easily relate to the sound i think

2. Frustration with the cultural and intellectual implications of the word "dubstep"

I am going to find the person who invented this stupid excuse for a genre. It's so degrading to artists that are actually good at electronic music.

some people make dubstep, a small portion of it is good. A huge chunk sucks major balls. you juss gotta live with it
its just a way to define a sound anywho. i think IDM is lame as, would much have rathered braindance to take off but it didnt.

boc has bass, dubstep has bass, unfortunately most people dont understand the difference haha
