Recommend films/documentaries, etc.

"The Weather Underground"

It's sort of biased/sensationalized, but this is a really great documentary about the underground weathermen who participated in a bunch of protests and ultimately, pretty heavy organized crime in America during the Vietnam War. A lot of the figureheads are still alive, and do interviews for the film. I think there's even some aphex twin in the soundtrack to top it off..

PS. this isn't necessarily a film, but a short thing my old teacher put together last year about the history of film.
He's an older guy I respect a whole lot, and knows a whole poop-ton about the industry. Also, it's all edited to "Arrival of the Birds" by Cinematic Orchestra, if you're a fan of that sort of thing as well...

Information is scant, but I am trying to find out more about the Omni magazine TV show that ran in 1981 Called "Omni: The New Frontier." I have every one of the magazines and ran across an August 1981 ad that seems to really promise a lot from the upcoming show. All I can find online is this and one other short clip on YouTube, and a two-episode VHS tape for sale at Amazon. I can't find episode breakdowns anywhere, so I guess it just ran for two episodes and was cancelled, maybe.

Anyway, this clip is the shit if you are into those vintage synth sounds, which I'm sure you are.

I haven't! This looks nuts, it would be interesting to see how the weathermen's feelings towards what they were doing could have changed after 30 years. Definitely checking it out when I get the chance.

"it's such a beautiful day" by don hertzfeldt.

before this film, there was "everything will be ok" and "i am so proud of you". this is the ACTUAL film. it combines the earlier two and a new one together to make a full film instead of a story split into parts.

Told through the stricken eyes of Bill, a sickly yet endlessly inquisitive man perpetually tormented by the lovely contradictions of everyday life, Hertzfeldt’s film utilises a stream-of-consciousness style that engages ideas large and small, emotions vast and personal with effortless ease. Voiceover narration and classical music cues are essential to telling Bill’s multi-faceted story, which constantly calls into question the inconsistencies of his past, the hypocrisies of his present and the terrifying uncertainty of his not so distant future.

By exploring the opaque corners of Bill’s fractured tale in this very specific way, Hertzfeldt leans heavily on repetition to connect bits of irony and fate that sometimes take place hundreds of years apart. Take for instance the surrealist middle section of the film, where Bill’s past memories of family trauma produce a veritable wellspring of tall tales, disjointed visions and unexplainable happenstance.

The Pusher Trilogy by Nicolas Winding Refn. Very raw look into the Copenhagen black market. All three films in the series are fantastic.

Psycho Cyber by Stelarc. An engineer / performance artist focused primarily on transhumanist ideas, technological-biological interfacing, and obscure robotics design. The documentary details 3 decades of his performances through a strange audio / visual mess, the editing is outrageous and even if you think the guy has lost his shit it's worth checking out as a visual / psychedelic treat at least.

Sátántangó by Béla Tarr - all 7 hours of it, but what an absolute masterpiece. Similar to Tarkovsky in feel, which is probably why I love it.

I can recommend Baraka.
It's movie/documentary in the tradition of Koyaanisqatsi. It has stunning views on the beauty of earth and it shows people living in symbiosis with nature. But it also shows what we do to nature and ourselves to maintain our standard of living.
I once watched it while coming up on LSD. That was a magical night
