But yet they will report on anything he does. I don't understand why they (or any music news site) report on music they obviously don't like. I really hate Pitchfork. I think their mediocre review of TCH biased a lot of people toward that album. They seem to have the power to make or break a band. I stopped visiting them along time ago. Glad to see I'm not missing anything.Radiobuzz wrote:I know Pitchfork is not very well liked around here but I actually do read it a lot, and as I was reading their Morning Phase review I thought how funny it is that they never give Beck's music a good score. Pretty much all of his albums are rated way lower than any of their hyped indie acts using the most ridicule excuses. Sea Change apparently is bad because the rhymes on the lyrics suck, and this new album sucks because the production is too nice and sounds like Nigel Goodrich. His great collection of songs Stray Blues suck because it's not cheap, even though it's the only review I have ever read that takes into account the price of the EP to judge how good it is. And everything he has made since 1996 sucks because it's not Odelay, except for Gûero which sucks because it's somehow similar to it. Come on Pitchfork, you just don't like Beck, admit it.

Just finished my first listen of Morning Phase.
I'm not exactly floored by any means, but I'm also certainly not disappointed. Definitely worth the purchase. It'll probably grow on me with more listens.
Anyone else feel like Sea Change just had more like.. Chutzpah behind it?
EDIT: Hold up, did I hear some faint brass right there at 2:27 on Waking Light?

Beck is probably the artist whose collection of music I have is the largest.
Saw a blind man walking down the street
Greets every person he chanced to meet
Saw a cop write a ticket to a man over fifty
Fell over laughing screaming he was a hippie
Ran into a granny had a smile on her face
Broke a trophy she just won in a race
Don't worry about the future
Forget about the past
Whether it's good or bad
It's a gas
Greets every person he chanced to meet
Saw a cop write a ticket to a man over fifty
Fell over laughing screaming he was a hippie
Ran into a granny had a smile on her face
Broke a trophy she just won in a race
Don't worry about the future

Have you checked out any of his early tapes that he used to hand out at his shows?Integer wrote:Beck is pretty much flawless and his latest effort is great, but I'll always be partial to his early stuff.

I have, but not in depth. Has 'Golden Feelings' ever been officially released? I snagged a torrent with his early stuff on mp3 a long time ago, but it was clearly a low quality rip from cassette. I'd love to find a lossless copy.Meddle wrote:Have you checked out any of his early tapes that he used to hand out at his shows?Integer wrote:Beck is pretty much flawless and his latest effort is great, but I'll always be partial to his early stuff.
Supposedly a remaster was done in 99 by the label without permission from Beck. As a result, only about 2000 copies were ever pressed on CD.Integer wrote:I have, but not in depth. That's a near-perfect description. The album itself is probably the one vinyl I want to own before I die, especially the version that was printed om gold translucent wax.Waterbagel wrote:Integer wrote:Beck is pretty much flawless and his latest effort is great, but I'll always be partial to his early stuff.
That whole album is so stale-cigarettes in the mid-summer desert sun, I love it to pieces.

mellow gold is such a brilliant album, defiantly his best, I bought on a whim years ago when it was first released and was pretty much stunned at the succession of brilliant tunes, I wasn't really expecting much tbh, remember it was back in the days where there was no internet so it was a blind listen.
I love odelay too from pretty much beginning to end, but after that I think the magic was fading for me, mutations was okay (nobody's fault but my own, wow) and midnight vultures was at the time classed as the worst album I'd ever heard by an artist I had love for lol. I think I used the cd case as a beermat.
his stuff nowadays is okay though and worth a listen, Sea Change is a great album but I can't say I rush home and punch the air and think 'I must play Sea Change!!!'
imo
