Humanity is inherently ugly and selfish, saying that something like Nazi Germany couldn't ever happen again is naive and foolish. Wrap it up in the stars and stripes and give it a shitty haircut, still ugly and selfish (and a compulsive backpedalling liar)
But you're the one who invoked Godwin's Law, and I agree it isn't a good look. I'll be frightened when Trump gets an amendment passed that will put him at the head of the legislative and judicial branches of government, but the Constitution has certainly been around longer than the Weimar Republic, and I believe it's safe to say that it's vastly more stable.
Opothecary wrote:Believe it or not, ingesting psilocybin or LSD once or twice a year for a handful of years doesn't turn one into a babbling fool hiding under one's bed later in life; on the other hand, it does have an interesting persistent effect. It's a little like going to a magic show and having the ability to know how all the magic tricks are performed. Long term, it turned me into an excellent reader of people. It wouldn't surprise me if some of the better professional poker players are experienced psychonauts. The one bad thing is, you do lose your sense of wonder in some respects.
I was only repeating something you said. I don't understand why you got offended by your own statement. Anyway, another thing that psychedelic drugs are good at is making people believe some really crazy shit.
Opothecary wrote:Seeing the rubes fall for Trump's snake oil salesman routine is only "terrifying" because you can see exactly what is going on while supposedly otherwise intelligent people are eating out his hands. It's Hitler without the Jews and Manson without the LSD. Lost souls looking for someone else to make things right.
It isn't "Hitler without the Jews" because Hitler was also very passionate about territorial expansion of Germany, which, as far as I understand, is not one of Don's goals. The territorial expansion is also the reason why Hitler failed as a leader, so I don't see how having a similar leader but without the war and genocide would be a bad thing. As for the Manson comparison, you're really stretching with that one. When a leading presidential candidate attempts to start a race war based on messages hidden in Beatles lyrics, then I might take that back.
Opothecary wrote:It's unfortunate the way modern Western culture demonizes "drug use" and puts it all under one tent. When we look back hundreds of years at traditional tribal structures and compare Western culture to that, the people who choose to intelligently ingest particular substances would have been (respected) medicine men back then. Now we call them hippies. We don't have actual tribes anymore, but I don't feel we have outgrown the need for the role of "medicine men". We still need to be responsible for getting in touch with our own true spirituality that isn't being monetized or manipulated in some way via organized religion. If each man is now a tribe in and of themselves, that means that we need to be our own medicine men; I feel that our society is in chaos and disarray partially because the powers that be have trained us out of being seekers. Now we're just consumers. We are out of balance.

I don't consider myself a "drug user" - I cut my hair and work 9 to 5 like anyone else. Please save the condescension for people who have actually been harmed spiritually, physically or emotionally by real drugs. To put it more bluntly, if you want to consider me a disabled drug addict, then I wish you good luck with your Koresh/Hitler/Manson style worship of a failed 4 times bankrupt billionaire New York liberal lifelong friend of the Clintons who decided he wanted to become a Republican this year to shake things up...because he was bored.
I don't know who you're trying to argue with at this point.
Opothecary wrote:Ultimately the engine that runs the Trump groundswell is 50-75 year old baby boomers that have never had to really work for anything, that sort of just coasted through life on the efforts of the WW2 generation (and their children who can't think for themselves). The Gen Xers were innovators, but the boomers are really just like an older, more racist, less skilled and just as entitled version of today's twenty somethings (I won't use the dreaded m word)
And now you're just making bigoted generalizations that I don't care to discuss.
Techboy wrote:if this is the crux of the matter then that's astounding and i've really missed something around this whole debate. rather than vote for the politician who is malleable and responds and listens to the will of the people, you're saying people are going to vote for the one who's a stubborn fucking asshole just because he's honest about it?
I'm not wrong. Also, there's a difference between responding to the will of the people and pandering.
Techboy wrote:bullshit, SURELY. anyone who says that's why they are voting trump is deluding themselves. the fact is that a voter would only cast a ballot for this cunt if they already actually agreed with his views. and imo if they agree with his views then they are nasty, sick minded, myopic, entitled and self-serving. and if they genuinely do not agree with his views but they vote for him anyway, then they are just a fucking idiot, which is a different thing but still a sign of the fuckin' end times.
When is the last time there has been a presidential candidate with whom you agreed ?

It's tempting but while it doesn't get personal we can let it go. It's getting borderline though.

It's hard to remember that I used to come here to get away from the horrors of the world. Instead I'm reminded repeatedly that the world is fucked and full of cunts.

The world isn't so bad. It may be frolicking in ignorant individuals (or at least not completely mindful people) but it doesn't have to be that horrible. If you think about the direct impact things truly have in your life, you can realize there's a lot that simply needs to be not on your mental plate, and to focus on just adapting or accepting things unchangeable, or at least presently so.

Work on, and be motivated to change things instead of enabling them to debilitate you.

Well the vast amount of people who will be voting for Trump is evidence enough. I assumed that would speak for itself. There are a myriad of Republican candidates who have similar viewpoints to Donald, and there's a reason why the party is nearly unanimous in its support for him in particular, as opposed to the more samey mix they had last election. As for calling me a zealot and accusing me of being a cultist, I'd like to know where you got those conclusions. You're trying to undermine my points by cherry-picking my post and then insulting me.

I'd like to add a small observation of mine as well, that the presidential elections in the United States are almost always driven by fear rather than respect. Nobody ever seems to like either of the candidate, so the media just focus on making people more afraid of one of them to make the other seem better in comparison. It's getting sickening hearing and seeing the liberal media repeat the name Trump ad nauseum to make people vote for their own shitty candidate, and it especially irritates me when people repeat this habit on their own. I don't follow conservative news sources, but from what I understand they aren't resorting to scare tactics as much as the liberal ones, so I at least respect them for that. I'm tired of the name Trump being brought up in every situation everywhere and I wish it would come to an end.

Can you explain which of Trumps' policies you agree with? That's not a loaded question I promise, I'm just curious.

Now there's actual speakers making actual Nazi salutes at the RNC. What's all this about Godwin's Law?

I don't know much about Trump or his policies and I don't care to learn about them.

I'd like to know your sources for that information. Whatever it is, it doesn't do anything to persuade me. Do you know what the definition of Fascist government is ?

tbh I think I hate Trump's VP more than Trump himself. Hard to say for sure, I mean of course Trump has some truly awful ideas in foreign policy (The Wall, being a giant dick to world leaders, etc), but at least he's kept out of social policy for the most part. Mike Pence, however, is a huge asshole who has fought against gay rights and reproductive rights his entire career, and because he doesn't understand shit about taxes really fucked with his state's economy by cutting taxes without also cutting actual things the government does. I mean that's basic math and this idiot couldn't figure it out. And judging by how Trump tried to get Kasich to be VP, it sounds like Pence will have unprecedented power in domestic policy. I really, really don't want to live in the Dark Ages, I really don't.

In general though, this election is just a fucking trainwreck. Our main choices are borderline facist and racist (Trump), or lying sociopath (Hillary). I literally do not know what to do besides find a cabin waaaaay out in the country and get the hell outta here come November. It feels like Sick Times for sure over here.

How is Trump fascist ? He seems to be a big supporter of capitalism to me. And you're right about none of the candidates being good, but I think you're overreacting. The United States have been in significantly worse situations before. If they can get through the Civil War in good shape, then I don't think there's any reason to worry about what's currently going on.
