Yes, her MHTRTC reaction+analysis video was my intro to her channel. Hearing and seeing it broken down and recreated and explained (often over my novice head) is very refreshing. Also watched her Geogaddi which I remember less well and her Tape 05 which was very good. She even, unknowingly seemingly, hit on the same melodic pattern as in the famous[!] YT video "Boards of Canada, recurrent melodic fragment explanation". Can't wait to see what she says about Inferno...

It's not strictly a review but this article about Paul McCartney being beaten to a number 1 by Boards feels worth preserving

Ben Thomas from The Guardian added a comment to the list of best albums of 2026 so far (which, as a fucking disgrace, did not have Inferno on it): https://www.theguardian.com/music/ng-in ... 026-so-far
This is what he said:

15 times? By that point we'd all come to the conclusion it's a masterpiece.I listened to the BOC album around 15 times to do that review, each time wondering whether new layers would reveal themselves to me ... I really did find it facile, shallow and pedestrian. Have had a lot of people get in touch to, ahem, express their views, though an almost equal number saying they agree!

Imagine going into the comments section of the paper you write for to double down on a review you did after a wee bit of criticism. So many journalists have lost their dignity in the social media age.Rikkiebags wrote:Ben Thomas from The Guardian added a comment to the list of best albums of 2026 so far (which, as a fucking disgrace, did not have Inferno on it): https://www.theguardian.com/music/ng-in ... 026-so-far

Absolutely this. Much as i'd love an indepth interview or two, there's a lot to be said for the band's approach of releasing a much-anticpated artistic statement and then saying absolutely nothing about it.jcnporter wrote: So many journalists have lost their dignity in the social media age.

The Guardian review:
"But the beats on those tracks, along with so many others here, are wretchedly pedestrian, plodding along in dreary, funkless steps."
"BOC were always at their best when they wielded a light-touch version of those trip-hop beats, as on Kid for Today, or a different rhythmic mode entirely, as on proto-dubstep track Amo Bishop Roden (both from the superb, even visionary 2000 EP In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country)."
Liam Howlett of The Prodigy, 2015:
Do you think there will be a kind of comeback of Big Beat or chemical breaks music in the next years?
"NO I HOPE NOT , lets move on"

I find it funny how triggered people seem to get by the use of the Hare Krishna mantra.

If you heard that album for about 15 times and write that kind of review, you certainly don't get the picture about this type of music. I would suggest he starts something different like flower arranging or so.

Not sure if this has been posted in another thread...
Another fascinating look at some of the harmonic music theory on the first half of the album. This just makes me love and appreciate the album even more.

This video only confirms my opinion even more why it took 13 years to release a next album.IanRedpoint wrote:Not sure if this has been posted in another thread...

It's a good video and I enjoyed it (he makes good videos generally) but he makes a lot of transcription errors there and some of his arguments about "what boc are doing" depends on those errors.
Ixi's transcription was a lot closer to the actual music.

Coverage of Infern on on the latest Oh God What Now (politics) podcast from Andrew Harrison (ex Q Magazine editor). Listen here 54 minutes in:

Someone posted this on reddit and the initial comments were like, "that old geezer probably has no idea what Boards of Canada even is" and before I could drop an ACTCHUALLLY MACCA HAS DONE A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF INTERESTING ELECTRONIC STUFF AND PROBABLY KNOWS BOC post, I was beaten to it. Missing the opportunity to be a condescending douche on reddit ruined my week.Negamuse wrote:It's not strictly a review but this article about Paul McCartney being beaten to a number 1 by Boards feels worth preserving

Yeah! Of all the musicians of his generation I can see them having a load to talk about honestly

for sure you can't work on music like this and not love what boc is doing

This is amazing. And yes, I thought it was fitting that Inferno and Paul McCartney’s new album were released on the same day. I like to think that The Beatles - especially throughout their psychedelic period - were massively influential on BOC.

Honestly yeah, Ixi is great. I appreciate how she engages with the musical theory of the stuff she does her videos on--it's more than an off-the-cuff reaction and value judgment. Insightful and fun!
