A friend I played tball with at age 4 who lived down my street for all of my childhood, graduated form high school with me, etc...he just left to join the Israeli army for a 2 year stint last Saturday. The next day I hear that violence is starting up again. Hooray.

This world is a mess. It's kind of hard to be optimistic.

it's sad that service in the israeli army is obligatory. you have no choice

EDIT: and btw, no israeli's soldiers died in the war, all attacks happen from fighter jets and helicopters

Isn't Hamas a political party that supports the destruction of Israel? It says so in its charter. And haven't radical Palestinians in Gaza been firing rockets onto Israeli soil recently? I mean, if Mexico were to elect a party based on its hatred for the US and it's radical elements began firing missles into Texas, there would be a response from the US government. This is not to say that we can condone Israel's actions either. They are killing hundreds and destroying communities. The tremendous use of force they are using is not justified by any means. But the psychological history of violence and religious animosity in the region unfortunately indicate that this conflict will continue.

It's going to continue, unfortunately.
But as I always say, Israel knew what it was doing when it pulled out of Gaza, and when it closed it's borders.. Israel has one of the best intelligence centers in the world, they definitely knew what was happening, and I believe they wanted this to happen in order for their right wing to win in the elections..

Sad but true.

Big demonstrations being held today in UK. Also had the first calls I've seen to boycott Israeli goods and to remove our Ambassador from Tel Aviv.

The death toll in Gaza has now passed 500. Al Jazeera is broadcasting some heartbreaking footage of a mother and her four dead children...

Interested to know what people make of Obamas quote saying only one US President should be involved at a time?

Seems to me you could read that one of two ways. Either a) his angle will be so dramatically different to Bush that he can't be seen to contradict the current idiots - sorry! - administration until his inauguration. Or b) he knows full well that despite his best efforts any attempts by him to distance the US from Israel will be scuppered by Neo-Con power/money within US business and Government and he is hoping the offensive will end before he takes office in 2 weeks time.

Thoughts/opinions?

EDIT: apparently ol' Barack is now "Deeply concerned about civilian casualties". Phew! For a minute there I thought he wasn't going to get too heavily involved....

Wonder where all of that Israeli firepower is coming from?

Your taxes.

Israel is the single highest recipient of US foreign aid; approximately 2.4 billion USD every year. A majority goes to purchasing the weapons that are killing all of those people you're reading about.

For a minute there I was worried Barack Obama was unconcerned about civilian casualties, but I guess everything is okay after all.
