True...if it's at the end, the loop could be even shorter. Sits well with the image I posted, though. (:oscillik wrote:let's not get too excited over this possible new "Spir.." track
remember, this is a photo of one of the (Infinite) records, which are locked-groove sets. there'll be maybe 4 or 8 bars worth of material on each locked groove (at a guess)

locked-grooves are literally a groove on the record that has no end and no beginning, hence why they've called these two records (Infinite)sevenELIXIR wrote:what do you mean by "locked-groove set?" are these just loops then??
they're there for DJs to mix with into their sets, although to be honest i doubt any working DJ would even dare take these records out on the road. since they are meant for DJ use, that's why i assumed that there'd be maybe 4 or 8 bars of music to each locked-groove. but since i don't own any locked groove records, i wouldn't know.
usually you encounter a locked-groove when your stylus has skipped, and it's created one on your record...of course this isn't really a desired effect! you can get some records that have a locked-groove as the run-out groove. i believe the Geogaddi promo has a locked-groove on it.

Glad you think so...it'd just be the perfect title for an infinitely looping piece. Plus, it's a kids toy from the 60's that mixes geometry with art...can't go wrong. Wish I still had mine. The name is a registered trademark though, so not sure if that affects the legality of using it as a track title. The Friendly Stranger wrote:I would put money on this.Skytree wrote:* crosses fingers *
Great article on locked-grooves and their history here.sevenELIXIR wrote:what do you mean by "locked-groove set?" are these just loops then??
the length of a locked groove is the same length no matter how far from the centre. it's rotating at a fixed speed. the only thing that will decide the duration is the speed at which it should be played.Skytree wrote:True...if it's at the end, the loop could be even shorter. It's only a track title, I can't see any legal issues. I can see it being a geogaddi outtake, dropped as it didn't sit with the theme of the album. Spirograph rewls. i've got a feeling that it might actually be a little teaser for the "new album(s)" that mdg has been mentioning. The Friendly Stranger wrote:It's only a track title, I can't see any legal issues. hmmm maybe. I can't see them going back to the childhood nostalgia route too obviously though to be honest. Anyone's guess really.oscillik wrote:i've got a feeling that it might actually be a little teaser for the "new album(s)" that mdg has been mentioning. The Friendly Stranger wrote:It's only a track title, I can't see any legal issues. surely that's not true?novayshun wrote:the length of a locked groove is the same length no matter how far from the centre. it's rotating at a fixed speed. the only thing that will decide the duration is the speed at which it should be played.Skytree wrote:True...if it's at the end, the loop could be even shorter. a locked groove at the beginning of a record will be longer than a locked groove near the end of the record. locked grooves that are the same length for the entire record would defy the laws of physics, surely?

Actually, Novayshun's correct. Imagine bits of marking tape placed in a line, one on each loop, radiating from the center of the LP. Regardless of the overall radius of each loop, the bits of marking tape will all make a full rotation in unison. So, the innermost loop, despite being smaller in radius, will be making one revolution in the same time as the larger, outermost loop.oscillik wrote:surely that's not true?novayshun wrote:the length of a locked groove is the same length no matter how far from the centre. it's rotating at a fixed speed. the only thing that will decide the duration is the speed at which it should be played.Skytree wrote: True...if it's at the end, the loop could be even shorter. What would defy physics is if all were making different revolutions at different times...the wax would fly apart, I'm afraid. (:
So, thanks for the correction Novayshun! It was fun to think about. Oscillik and I (I think) were stuck in circumfrence mode.
ahhh rightio, thanks Novayshun and Skytree for the clarificationSkytree wrote:Actually, Novayshun's correct.
