Re: What Does Your 'User Name' Mean?
Many years ago, my English-speaking friends started to call me "Fernie" for short, and I liked it enough to use it as my name. I just don't even bother come up with a funny/creative alias for myself. I like my name, and I wouldn't try to define my identity through something funny or clever. I like ...

Re: The problem with musical structure
So this is the result of the last couple of months of work.
It's only one track out of a planned six, but it's already something. I suspect that was the most difficult track to write, anyway, as it serves as a sort of prelude for what's about to come.

All of them?drillkicker wrote:(...) a friend of mine, when talking about one of the tracks from Exai, described it as "the big clunky one." I still don't know which one he was thinking of.
(but seriously, I'd wager on "recks on". Those drums do have a big, clunky feel)

Re: Modernism
For me, even as a child growing up in the 80s, I drew futuristic cars and rockets (not necessarily ones I would own), wanted to be an astronaut, learning was exciting because the future was bright.
Fast forward to today and yes, it's a cliche and a generalisation, but kids seem to want a quick ...

Re: The problem with musical structure
It's been two months, and I think I managed to overcome my concerns. I think most of my worries came from a very disproportionate internal pressure to produce and make progress, and fear of not getting things right. When we're afraid of our own capabilities, I think even the most minor problems can ...

Re: Maybe there already is a new EP.
I may have said this elsewhere but the thing with Cage wasnt as simple as 'hurr im copyrighting silence' it was that the timing of it was 4 minutes 33 or 273 seconds... -273 degrees C being Absolute Zero - hence the silence.
I've never heard about that connection. It is known that Cage often used ...

Re: What are you writing?
It's difficult to make relevant citicism based on a few paragraphs which are basically long descriptions of vague settings, but if you're pulling that off without much serious training, then you're on a good track. A few specific lines feel a bit perfunctory, but it works as the start of something ...

I always racked my brain for examples every time I saw this thread, but never came up with anything. But just now, I remembered this: Junia, by the Banda Black Rio.

Unless I'm mishearing, Track 3 is made of two or three samples being triggered over a bed of... another sample? I'm pretty sure layering like that (with melodies even!) HAD to have been done before BoC

Re: Any chiptune fan?
That's a pretty illuminating interview. It's interesting to see how the game came out as something put together rather randomly, because that's exactly how Minecraft is. It also annoys me that other sandbox games seem to be drawing on that influence way too heavily; Starbound is an excellent game ...

I really admire your effort to try to work out this stuff on your own. Still, those transcriptions look very much like the result of someone trying to work out that stuff on his own.

Re: rush
Rush ain't really a rock out group (with some exceptions, e.g. The Analog Kid, Animate, Far Cry), that's not what makes them good. They don't play as if they had something to prove. They know they're good, and I guess that's what disappoints/frustrates some people. When they try too hard to rock (e ...
